Racism, alive and kicking.

I hate to even broach this topic. My fear is that I'll be branded a racist, as our current society is quick to label opinions out of step with diversity.
A recent local newscast showed workers at a chicken processing plant abusing chickens. They were throwing them against the wall and stomping on them along with various other horrible and inexplicable acts (that's a whole other topic left to another day).
The newscast was the inevitable water-cooler conversation topic at the office the next day. Everybody expressed disgust, shock and dismay.
A black co-worker said something to the effect of, "well, what's the difference? They used to beat us up before they killed us too."
I can't understand the depth of the anger and hatred that causes somebody to say something like that.
What would the reaction of the group have been if a white person had said, "yeah, we used to beat you to death too", referring to the black co-workers? It doesn't take much imagination.
Race relations are at an all time best, but we still have much to overcome.

  1. I agree with you on this one. Killing/torturing chickens and torturing/killing human beings are two different things, that can't even be compared.

It's too bad that some people like to whip out that "race card" every chance they get. I mean, what does killing chickens really have to do with slavery?

    A couple of points:

-Check out the book "The Ten Things You Can't Say in America", written by Larry Elder. He's an Republican African-American that has a radio talk show out here on the West Coast. The first chapter of the book is "Blacks Are More Racist Than Whites". It's very interesting.

-Who really cares? Animals don't have rights--no matter what those leather-shoed PETA protesters say. I'm against animal cruelty, but I'm not going to get arrested for shooting my sick dog and charged with murder. I do think that these people were acting wrong in an ethical sense, but legally they weren't doing anything wrong.

-I just find it amusing how people are more concerned about the ethical treatment of animals over human beings.
