I think both Watergate and Viet Nam have permanently altered the way the media covers the government (at least the executive branch) and the military. The big scoops are in fault finding, not praise giving, so there's no incentive to cover positive events. It's obviously a lot easier to second guess than to try to find insight in what is actually going on.
